Child Smile

Child Smile is a scheme that focuses on improving children’s oral health across the whole of Scotland. At Bank Street Dental Surgery we have several nurses trained by the Child Smile scheme.

At what age should I register my child with a

Dental Practice?

Aim to register your child soon after birth or at least as soon as

the first tooth appears.

Treatments for children through Child Smile

Fluoride varnish- This provides teeth with extra protection in

addition to brushing. Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that is

put on the tooth. It has a pleasant taste and a fruity taste.

Fissure Sealants - This provides a protective layer across the tooth

which prevents any bacteria or pieces of food from getting stuck.

This treatment is quick and only takes a few minutes per tooth.

Tooth brushing

Baby - You should brush your child’s teeth twice daily from the first appearance of a

tooth using a small toothbrush with soft bristles and a smear of fluoride toothpaste

that is at least 1000ppm (parts per million) over a dry brush.

Toddler - At this age try and introduce tooth brushing into their morning and evening

routine. You should use a small toothbrush with soft bristles and pea sized amount of

toothpaste.

Pre-school - By the age of 7 children’s hand-eye coordination is developed enough for

them to brush their teeth themselves. They should be brushing their teeth twice daily;

once in the morning and once last thing at night.
